About Friesday

Mutual Aid, Not Charity

Friesday is a community-driven mutual aid initiative. People gather in public spaces, cook fries together, and share them freely. Participants contribute what they can — ingredients, cooking help, or simply their presence.

The format is deliberately replicable. Neighborhoods, parks, community groups, or local venues can organize their own gatherings without central control. Friesday.org exists to enable replication and visibility — not to control the initiative.

The long-term vision is to establish Friesday as a widely recognized summer tradition. By keeping the model simple, open, and decentralized, communities can adapt it to their own culture and needs.

What Friesday Is Not

Not a business. Nobody is selling anything. Fries are shared, not sold.

Not a vendor market. This isn't a food fair or farmers market. There are no booths or brands.

Not exclusive. Anyone can show up, eat, and participate. No restrictions, no judgement about toppings or participation.

Not centrally controlled. There's no Friesday corporation. Communities self-organize.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Friesday?

Every Friday during July and August. Some gatherings run on specific Fridays only — check the map for details.

Do I need to bring anything?

Nope. Just show up. If you want to contribute, bring a topping, sauce, drink, or music. Or just bring yourself.

Can I host my own Friesday?

Yes! That's the whole point. Check out our hosting guide and register your gathering on the map.

Is this legal?

Sharing food with neighbors is generally legal. Some cities require permits for outdoor cooking in public parks — check your local rules. Private property (driveways, yards) is usually fine.

What about food allergies?

Hosts should label common allergens on toppings. The basics — potatoes and oil — are naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan.

How is this funded?

Mutual aid. People donate what they can. Hosts typically cover their own supplies, and our fundraising helps cover equipment and supplies for gatherings that need support.

Can I do this outside of July and August?

Absolutely. The July-August window is the core season, but fries have no off-season. Do your thing.
