Host a Friesday
Anyone can host. Pick a spot, get some potatoes, and invite your neighbors. Here's everything you need to know.
What You Need
🥔 Potatoes
5-10 lbs feeds a decent crowd. Any variety works — russets are classic. Cut them into sticks or wedges.
🛢️ Cooking Oil
Vegetable, peanut, or sunflower oil. Enough to fill your fryer. Plan for about 1 gallon per session.
🍳 A Fryer or Pot
Deep fryer, Dutch oven, or large pot with a thermometer. Propane burners work great outdoors.
🧂 Basics
Salt, plates/bowls, napkins, tongs, a slotted spoon or spider. Paper bags for draining.
Food Safety Basics
- →Never leave hot oil unattended. Keep a fire extinguisher or baking soda nearby.
- →Keep oil temperature between 325-375°F (165-190°C). Too low = soggy fries, too high = fire risk.
- →Pat potatoes dry before frying — water and hot oil don't mix.
- →Let oil cool completely before disposing. Never pour down a drain.
- →Label common allergens on any toppings (peanuts, dairy, gluten).
Picking a Spot
- →Parks, community gardens, driveways, parking lots, front yards — anywhere neighbors can gather.
- →Check if your city requires a permit for outdoor cooking in public spaces. Many don't for small gatherings.
- →Set up a table for toppings. Encourage people to bring their own sauces and dips.
- →Make a simple sign so people know what's happening and that it's free.
What to Tell People
"We're making fresh fries and sharing them with the neighborhood. It's free — just show up. Bring a topping if you want. No catch, just community."
